چکیده

After a reg ionwide two-cen tu ry per iod of deforestation and agrar ian expansion, the d ramat i c reduct ion in agr icul ture in N e w Eng land dur ing the past 150 years genera ted a wave of land-cover change . Fores t cover increased from less than 3 0 % to more than 7 5 % in m a n y regions. Despi te suppor t ing one of the densest h u m a n popula t ions in the nat ion, N e w Eng land is a m o n g the most heavi ly forested regions in the Uni ted States. T h e story of this remarkab le l andscape t ransformat ion is one of recovery of nature , the legacy of past events in the deta i ls of m o d e r n ecosys tems , and oppor tun i ty ma tched by chal lenge for conservat ion. T h e rees tab l i shment of forest ecosys tem character is t ics progressed unevenly, with composi t ional , s tructural , and functional attr ibutes exhibit ing different lags in development . In all cases , however, the m o d e r n distr ibution of vascular plant species, levels of forest b iomass , and soil s t ructure , chemist ry , and fertility are strongly condi t ioned by legacies of a var ied land-use history. T h e scale and gra in of this l andscape condi t ioning is control led by the physical env i ronmenta l templa te (e.g., topography, glacial geology, soils), geographica l location relative to

An integrated reconstruction of recent forest dynamics in a New England cultural landscape

Broad-scale patterns of vegetation response to three centuries of human disturbance in the northeastern United States are well understood, but stand-scale (0.1–10 ha) interactions between land-use history and the ecological processes underlying these patterns are not. Enduring legacies of land-use history, though pervasive in modern forests, are not always obvious or intuitive, particularly in ...

Prospects for tropical forest biodiversity in a human-modified world.

The future of tropical forest biodiversity depends more than ever on the effective management of human-modified landscapes, presenting a daunting challenge to conservation practitioners and land use managers. We provide a critical synthesis of the scientific insights that guide our understanding of patterns and processes underpinning forest biodiversity in the human-modified tropics, and presen...

Conservation issues and approaches for dynamic cultural landscapes

Although the details of New England’s history and current landscape conditions are unique, studies of the region underscore ecological themes that are common to many landscapes and ecosystems worldwide. In similar fashion, the region’s dynamic history raises challenges for conservationists and land managers that are shared by decision makers for any region that bears the legacies of environment...

The influence of successional processes and disturbance on the structure of Tsuga canadensis forests.

Old-growth forests are valuable sources of ecological, conservation, and management information, yet these ecosystems have received little study in New England, due in large part to their regional scarcity. To increase our understanding of the structures and processes common in these rare forests, we studied the abundance of downed coarse woody debris (CWD) and snags and live-tree size-class di...

Two-dimensional wavelet analysis of spruce budworm host basal area in the Border Lakes landscape.

Increases in the extent and severity of spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) outbreaks over the last century are thought to be the result of changes in forest structure due to forest management. A corollary of this hypothesis is that manipulations of forest structure and composition can be used to reduce future forest vulnerability. However, to what extent historical forest managemen...
